Portland Parks & Recreation Budget in Brief

This year offers a unique opportunity to achieve a sustainable funding path for Portland Parks & Recreation. The requested budget includes a replacement of the remaining portion of the 2002 Parks Levy, which funds $2.7 million of operations and maintenance, with General Fund dollars. Other key elements include stable funding for Youth/Teen programs, funding for park security 7 day per week, funding to address maintenance of existing facilities, and continuation of innovative natural area and trail work. A summary of the PP&R budget request is attached and available at our website: www.portlandonline.com/parks/index.cfm?c=40431. The complete PP&R Requested Budget is available at the Community Budget Center at www.portlandonline.com.

Public Comment and Testimony

There are many opportunities to share your priorities and feedback with the City Council before the budget is adopted in late June. Now is the time to send a letter, participate in the Community Budget Forums or plan to attend a public hearing. You can share written comments or questions anytime using the online form at the Community Budget Center: www.portlandonline.com/omf. Letters can also be given to Budget Team staff at scheduled meetings or sent to the City Council by US Postal mail. You can share your ideas, ask questions and discuss funding priorities at the interactive Community Budget Forums in February (see details below). This step in the budget process comes before the City Budget Teams begin their work to review the requested budgets of each bureau. The Portland Parks & Recreation requested budget will be considered by the Adams-Sten Budget Team on Monday, March 10 at 3:00 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. There is a very brief public comment period scheduled during this initial session of the budget team. A follow-up meeting on the Parks & Recreation budget will be held by the Adams-Sten Budget Team on Thursday, March 14 at 3:00 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. There will be no public comment taken at this session.
