We’ll have a most interesting speaker: Sheree Stewart, an Environmental Scientist and Geologist, will give a talk: Natural Disasters – Planning for Safety and Sustainability. She will be speaking about her firsthand experiences in the aftermath of hurricane Rita, and how the lessons she learned there directly apply to the earthquake risk we face in Portland. She writes:
“It was not the massive destruction that shocked me, it was the impacts to the people and the challenges associated with the individuals’ response that did. I was shocked by how many individuals were directly affected by this regional disaster, as well as the extent to which they were affected. None of my training prepared me to understand the real impacts and long-term effects of the destruction. The supplies in the widely-advised “72-hour emergency kits” were simply not what was needed! There were MANY more important long-term impacts and needs at the household level than I could have ever anticipated from the training I had received. We need to seriously reconsider what is necessary to sustain families for their household needs during 3 to 4 weeks of post-hurricane or earthquake traumas.”
