October slide
Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. (SWNI) Land Use Committee is pleased to host a land slide forum from 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, September 29. The forum will be in the Multnomah Center, auditorium, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy.
Last October, the SW Hills Residential League (SWHRL)held an excellent landslide forum that turned out to be timely. Less than a week before the SWHRL forum, a major slide occurred on SW Burlingame Place, demolishing one house, and damaging others.
The SWHRL forum was so successful that a number of people called for its reprise. We hope SWNI’s forum will be attractive to both people who attended the earlier forum and those who did not. SWNI’s forum will be similar in some respects but different in others.
Doug Morgan and Bill Burns, speakers at SWHRL’s forum, will return to speak at the SWNI forum. Doug is the Site Development Section Manager at the City of Portland Bureau of Development Services. Doug will focus on relevant city regulations and things residents can look for to spot potential problems. Bill’s presentation will focus on the science of water movement and how it causes slides.
Dick Springer, Executive Director of the West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District and a representative the Tryon Creek Watershed Council will speak from a policy and neighborhood viewpoint. They will talk about the work of their organizations do to improve the health of southwest watersheds and local programs we can all take advantage of to better manage stormwater runoff.
Ronald Fredrickson, Manager of the Consumer Advocacy Team at the Oregon Insurance Division will speak about what kind of damage is and is not covered by standard homeowners’ policies and additional coverages that may be available.
You can start participating in our forum right now. One of our speakers asked that we compile a list of issues and questions that participants would like addressed. So let me know now about your thoughts, issues, and questions. Contact me, Leonard, at 503-823-4592 or leonard@swni.org, and I’ll pass the information onto our speakers.
The forum at the time of this writing have not been worked out. But, generally, speakers in turn will present their information. Then we’ll follow with a panel discussion and question/answer period. We hope to have lots of time for questions. If you have questions now about the event, call me at my number above.
