What we do
Southwest Hills Residential League is one of 17 neighborhood associations in southwest Portland, Oregon belonging to the Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. coalition. It is bordered by the Sylvan Highlands, Arlington Heights, Goose Hollow, Homestead, Hillsdale, Bridlemile and Portland Downtown neighborhoods. See boundary map at: http://www.portlandoregon.gov/oni/article/58642
The SWHRL Neighborhood Association, through its volunteer Board elected by the membership, works to preserve and enhance the livability of the neighborhood. We organize social events, such as the annual picnic, and the quarterly forums with speakers on topics such as landslides, aging in place, neighborhood history, landscaping for watershed health, ballot measures, candidates running for office, and emergency preparedness, to name a few.
Via its website and newsletters, SWHRL alerts residents to events and issues which may affect the neighborhood. SWHRL also helps neighbors express their concerns to the city on issues related to land use and zoning, traffic, transportation and parking, crime and safety, nuisances and conflict resolution, education, and social welfare. In order to do this, we need to know what your concerns are. If you have ideas for SWHRL forum/meeting topics, or for neighborhood projects, if you’d like to become a member of SWHRL, receive our newsletters, if you have issues you need help with, or if you want to volunteer to help SWHRL with its mission, contact SWHRL at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Nancy Seton, 503-224-3840.
SWHRL Welcoming Statement
Message from your SWHRL Neighborhood Association President Nancy Seton:
So many of us are saddened by recent hate crimes, plus the rhetoric and actions against immigrants & refugees. Weren’t we all immigrants (voluntary or not) here once? Let’s resist the climate of fear! We want you to know:
The SWHRL COMMUNITY WELCOMES ALL: all races, all religions, all sexual orientations, all gender orientations, refugees, immigrants, and others who feel excluded. Our neighborhood is for everyone! We are enriched by our diversity here in SW Portland. We stand with you. We want you to feel welcome and safe here.
If you have neighbors who are immigrants or minorities who might feel excluded, please invite them to neighborhood meetings – our SWHRL quarterly membership forums and/or Board meetings. Direct them to our website http://www.swni.org/swhrl. Give them our email address email@example.com. We want to understand their concerns and hear their voices as we work on neighborhood priorities.
Check out “Portland United Against Hate” - a new community-initiated partnership of community-based organizations, neighborhood associations and the City’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI). It will act as a rapid response system for “reporting and tracking hateful acts” and offering support and protection. Find their joint statement at: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/oni/72583
Your Donations Welcome
While the SWHRL Board works to help neighbors on a strictly volunteer basis, it uses member donations to fund our newsletter, community events, such as our annual picnic, and any projects beneficial to the neighborhood. This could be trail building, traffic safety measures, or our Vista Spring Restoration Project. Contributions are tax-deductible if you use the donate button on the left or if checks are made out to Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. (SWNI), a 501(c)(3), with a note: "For SWHRL," or "For SWHRL Vista-Spring Restoration." Mail to Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc., 7688 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, OR 97219. Or checks can be sent directly to SWHRL at PO Box 1033, Portland, OR 97207.
